Bajka Second release from the collective that produced our ‘Das Goldenes Zeitalter’ 12”, this one focuses on the amazing vocal talents of Bajka (pronounced ‘Biker’!) – a unique singer who combines the sensual jazz stylings of Billie Holiday with the rhythmic approach of a jazz poet. Probably best known for her work with Radio City on Ubiquity - their single ‘The Hop’ was in many DJ boxes last year - and their new material is also currently causing excitement on CDR – here we showcase the deeper and more experimental side of her music.

‘I Can No Poet Be’ conjures up images of smoky rooms and late nights – a psychedelic journey into Bajka’s ethereal world, underpinned by a pulsing waltz style rhythm and eastern melodies – truly hypnotic, and more than ably accompanied by Das Goldenes Zeitalter, who take over on the B-Side for an extended workout on ‘Love’s Serenity’ – properly good spiritual jazz that wouldn’t have been out of place on a Strata East or Tribe LP from the ‘70s.

It’s exciting to be able to release music of such high quality and great to know it’s being made today – and although recorded a few years ago, this music can instantly be added to the shelf that is no doubt already heaving under the weight of your Sun Ra, Gary Bartz and Pharoah Sanders lp’s. In today’s musical climate – with the rise of great bands like Build an Ark, the Nostalgia 77 Octet and the Soil & Pimp, this is truly outstanding jazz music with a serious groove and a not inconsiderable amount of soul.

'Amazing!' Gilles Peterson
'Her voice is simply spine tingling and everything about her music invokes a culture clash of East Meets West'' STRAIGHT NO CHASER MAGAZINE

Das Goldene Zeitalter Das Goldenes Zeitalter or ‘The Golden Age’ in English, is a group made up of members of funk bands the Poets of Rhythm, the Heliocentrics and the Soul Destroyers – taking a left turn at the lights and heading for deep spiritual jazz territory!

Influenced by everything from Afro rhythms to Surrealist Cinema, and on a mission to ‘re-humanise today’s music by ‘tapping into the secret sounds of the cosmos’, DGZ produces a heady mixture of modal jazz and ethnic rhythms, topped off with the gorgeous idiosyncrasies of Bajka’s sublime vocals.

Don’t be put off by the word ‘jazz’ – these tracks contain the same rock hard rhythms as their individual funk output, but with a more introspective edge and the result is some seriously deep grooves. The recordings were made a couple of years ago in the surroundings of the Black Forest, and show these musicians on top form. The current leader Max Weissenfeldt on keys and vibes, and new addition drummer extraordinaire Malcolm Catto will be leading this supergroup into new areas that just have to be heard and will happily find a home here at Jazzman.

We are proud to put out these limited releases that go some way to showing the scope of possibilities for this extremely talented and creative group of musicians, showing that the spirit of Independent Jazz didn’t die with Strata East and is still alive today!

“I think both the new jazzman 12"s are incredible! 9/10 Great to hear Gerald's taste in new music is as good as his taste in old stuff!” Mr Scruff
“WOW! What a killer track! Tottally love both singles” Adrian Gibson (Jazz Café)

Sexteto Excelencio Rumour has it that his latinised version of Rusty Bryant's Prestige classic 'Fire Eater' is the Bamboos in disguise. If true it goes to show all along some thing that I have long suspected, and that's that the Bamboos are capable of excellent musicianship, being able to bring some magic and spark to whatever they turn their hand to. Nice one!

Timo Lassy Helsinki based saxophonist Timo likes his sound BIG. Having played for the Five Corners Quintet, the Blue Note recording U-Street All Stars, and Jimi Tenor’s live outfit, to name a few it's time he coined in the bucks by having his name in lights on the cover (although not literally!)
