A rare and beautiful treasure from Chicago's Phil Cohran and his legendary Artistic Heritage Ensemble – material recorded at the end of the 60s, but only issued here for the first time ever! The sound on the record is amazing – much deeper, and more forceful than anything else we've ever heard from Cohran – almost in Sun Ra Arkestra territory at times, given the group's out-there playing, and bold collective action! Includes download code.

It Is Because I'm Black
Label:
Numero
Condition/Country:

£14.75
Coming hot on the heels of his first full length, the self-proclaimed “most sampled artist of all time,” released the ground-breaking black concept LP 'Is It Because I’m Black' (a full 13 months before Marvin Gaye’s 'What’s Going On'). Throwing away the notion of a sophomore jinx, Syl delivered this politically charged document. Issued on 150gram vinyl and housed in a tip-on jacket.

£17.99
Now-Again licensed this essential album from Zambia's 70s "Zamrock" scene from the Witch's last living member, vocalist Emmanuel Jagari Chanda. Introduction is the first album by the Witch ensemble, and it ranges from garage rock to heavy psych; it moves from rambling folk to bopping funk
Witch
In The Past
Label:
Now Again
Condition/Country:
US
£17.99
Witch's musical arc is contained to a five year span and, in retrospect, is a logical one. The bands first two, self-produced albums - released in unison with the birth of the commercial Zambian recording industry – are exuberant experiments in garage rock, and are as influenced by the Rolling Stones as they are James Brown. In The Past, their second album, is the perfect follow-up for anyone exposed to the Witch band through their landmark Introduction.

Originally released in 1977, Ebo Taylor's self-titled album is a rarity that truly exposes the genius of the Ghanaian producer and arranger. Having spent most of the 1970s involved in Ghana's afro-funk output, working with different bands and musicians alike, Taylor put forward his own unique blend of Ghanaian highlife and afro-beat with this self-titled release.

Conflict Nkru!
Label:

The five tracks that make up Conflict are a perfect example of Taylor's trademark approach that saw him inject a heavy dose of funk into Ghana's traditional highlife grooves in an attempt to move away from what he saw as the music's more traditional qualities. The LP features artwork restored from the original and comes on limited edition heavyweight vinyl.

WOW BACK IN STOCK!!! Amazing LP, I cannot recommend highly enough! Supreme modal/spiritual jazz with an edge that only comes from highly creative and individual artists like this. Gore himself is Jamaican, yet his 4 private press LPs were recorded in Europe and hopelessly rare - I have only one myself, and have never even seen the others. This album is a 'best of' done with the blessing of Gore and his family, and is unlikely to be around for long.

Label:

Lots and lots and lots of zany radio & tv ads from between 1959 and 1965. Products range from the new space-age Hoover Keymatic, for which Gray provided an electronic score, to hooky jingles for new banana cereals. There is a sense of innocence, urgency, madness and fun across the whole album. Among the vocal talents on show are the Mike Sammes Singers, Eric Sykes and even Barry Gray shows off his vocal chords every now and again.

"Who's this guy?" I hear you asking. Fair comment, I'd never heard of him either, but when I tell you he was in part responsible for the formation of Stax records, Booker T and the MGs and the Mar-Keys as well as a string of Memphis hits, then you might take a bit more notice. Dead at 33, his is a story worth telling, and LITA do a good job with this gatefold LP that includes stories, pics, inserts, download card and not forgetting some fine Memphis music by the likes of The Martinis, The Pak-Keys, Stacy Lane and LH & the Memphis Sounds.

The Cults Percussion Ensemble must have one of the best group names of all time. To many it will immediately come across as something sinister, a touch spooky and possibly a bit dramatic too. They are certainly two of those but the use of the word “Cults” here is easily misinterpreted. Cults, in this case, is the suburb of Aberdeen. This is the only album by the group. Assembled by percussion teacher Ron Forbes in 1976, the average age of the students was just 14.

Songs of Experience
Label:
Capitol
Condition/Country:
USA
£12.00
Sister-album to the Axe man’s gorgeous 1968 release, ‘Songs of Innocence’, here is a further instalment of aural musings inspired by William Blake’s work of the same name. Apt really, given that this truly is poetic stuff – a brooding, deeply intense mix of classical overtures and prog-jazz grooves. Sumptuous, foreboding, and the darker of the two releases, this is achingly bittersweet stuff. Lush string arrangements soar and descend with rushing intensity, pretty melodies interlace with dense, menacing horns, and deep, throbbing bass sounds entwine with lonely, haunting piano lines. Moody, mercurial and suffused with Dionysian abandon, this is a truly beautiful record, bursting with rapturous emotion that will linger on well into the silence...

In the old days if you won a 'Battle of the Bands' contest you'd be rewarded with the opportunity to record a 45 or an LP. Sounds great - and it was - but they don't tell you that they only press a miniscule amount of said 45 or LP, and put sod all effort into distribution and sales. So when these things are eventually discovered years later, like the East of Underground LP, they're usually hideously rare. This band won such a contest, along with a rock band called Soap, and the resulting double LP was funded by the US army. Being better at invading, bombing and pulverising other countries than promoting sweet music, the US army did a great job of recording the album for the winners, but a right hash of promoting it. Hence rarity. This welcome reissue doesn't include the side recorded by Soap, but who cares about rock music anyway. It's EofU's funky soul that grabs us here, and yes with every track being good it certainly lives up to the hype it has, which is 1,000,000x more than the multi-billion-dollar-budget US army could give.

Assembled by Latin artist Eddie Palmieri as a means of fusing latin and funk into a cohesive whole, Harlem River Drive are a racially mixed band whose gritty sound is taken straight outta the very place their name references. The title song is a bit of a set-text for Nu-Yorikan and rare-groove collectors, and rightfully so – its a swaggerin’, struttin’ anthem to the deprived streets of its genesis. Big soul vocals undercut with heavenly backing harmonies (a-la Rotary Connection), lashings of wah-wah-laced licks, funky vamps, and horns so deliciously smooth they’ll melt you like butter are order of the day here. John Baker was at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in London from the beginning and was one of the core three composers who conceived the sounds we came to know and love. Baker's work on Doctor Who is probably best known, but this forty-nine track disc of previously unreleased material delves deep into his career and has been painstakingly put together by people that truly love his work. Essential purchase!

The album "Let Love Take A Holiday" was recorded and produced on the Reynolds Records label out of San Francisco. While copies of the 7” single “A Dream Without You” are not too difficult to find, the album barely exists with less than 200 copies pressed. By 1983 when Let Love Take A Holiday was recorded; politics, drugs, and peoples’ perception of love had changed a lot. ‘Free Love’ was no longer accepted. And so the lyrics reflect a more realistic attitude. While shying away from the typical love songs that characterize soul music, "Let Love Take A Holiday" is a gem of modern soul that still retains an innocence and is just as relevant today as it was 25 years ago.

Startlingly restored and remastered at Abbey Road, and sleeved in Richard Dumas’ amazing phographic portraits, this is Moondog at his most modern, direct, original, fresh, playful and let-it-be-said unpretentious — featuring the Honking Geese, Tony Schwartz’s brilliant outdoors recordings (particularly improved in Honest Jon’s new version), with interventions from a ship’s foghorn, a tapdancer and a cocker spaniel, and signature rhythms for trimba, oo, tuji, yukh, and ostrich feathers.
Andy Warhol’s mother got it straight, on the 1957 Prestige cover of Story — ‘Moondog is a poet who versifies in sound, a diarist overcome by love, curiosity and amusement by everything that reaches his ears, all of which he transposes into a symphony of himself. It may be the roar from the streets; it may be the casual chatter in a room or, best of all, it will be that secret music that seeps through imagination and memory. These experiences, so dull to the dull but so alive to him, he orchestrates into a record of those enchanting conversations everyone can hold with himself would he only listen for a bemused moment. They make up the script of that unique tragi-comedy, the story of anyone’s life. Pricking up our ears would be so easy, yet it is seldom done. But when Moondog compels us to do it, we are entranced and delivered willingly into new worlds of meaning.’

Most websites that sell records just copy the blurb from the press release. Not me. When I write these little notes I have the music playing in the background, and I write what I want. Actually I had to stop typing when this record came on, as it took up my attention completely. A blind musical genius who dressed like a Viking and preferred to sleep on the streets, Moondog made and played all his own instruments. He was an artist as charasmatic and innovative as Sun Ra, but unlike the mighty Ra his music remains of this world, yet this is music the likes of which you've never heard before. Top marks for this double LP reissue which features his incredible music, with excellent liners, from the '40s to the '70s. PS there's even an elusive Mr Scruff sample in there too, get the record, see if you can find it! Listen Listen Listen

This is a reissue of a very rare 10" LP released on Epic in the '50s. You gotta take your hat off to anyone releasing this adorable oddity, especially to a major US record label during the height of post-war apple-pie conservative America. To me any record entitled 'And his Friends' conjures up images of a kiddie party record where little Tommy the Elephant can enjoy nursery rhymes with his pals. It's a quaint way of saying 'Here is my humble offering of music that I make with my mates - not musicians, fellow band-members or orchestra - but mates. Having said that, I am surprised Moondog would have any mates given the music on offer here, or rather mates outside the loony bin that is. That's not to say it's no good - far from it - but it's just that it's a little odd. But who said that's a bad thing, and who says the freaks shouldn't have any mates? Listen

Musically it is intriguing, inspirational and intense; spooky reeds and and ethnic vibe - but with JAZZ and FUNK and SOUL all right there, in the mix! This is a reissue of course, done by those super Ethiopiques guys in France. Now don't even THINK about finding an OG, cos even if you did chances are it would be thrashed! Excellent excellent music, even if you don't know it that well, give it a try and I bet you'll be playing it for years to come. Listen Listen Listen

If you're into Cohran's other work then YOU WILL LOVE THIS!!! This is the most recently recorded album from the visionary BROTHER KELAN PHILIP COHRAN and his band LEGACY. This record was influenced and realized in 1993, shortly after the passing of Brother Phil’s friend, mentor and band mate, HERMAN BLOUNT (better known as SUN RA). It was heard publicly for the first and only time at the Adler Planetarium in Chicago, Illinois that same year. By channeling the energy of Sun Ra, Brother Phil brings us closer to enlightenment, closer to the cosmos with melodies that are as ancient as time itself. Sun Ra believed that music is the voice of the spirit, the energy we want to live within. In the aftermath of his death, Brother Phil drew upon his mentor’s cosmic perspective to produce an elegiac album that is utopian in spirit: a vessel brim-full of primordial vibes and a memo from some higher astral plane. In the words of its maker, African Skies is a “nourishing and inspirational” document—a nuanced portrait of one of the most visionary musicians of our time in his prime. African Skies, available commercially for the first time ever, is the first record to be released since the stellar Malcolm X Memorial record in 1969.

Previously unreleased Sabu recorded at the time of the legendary 'Afro Temple'. An absolutely incredible find from vaults of the Swedish radio, and released here for the first time. Music is straight from the 'Afro Temple' vein ie super heavy percussive funky jazz with all energy and excitement Sabu and his disciples could muster - and that's a LOT. Highly recommended, and like the Ethiopiques series, will keep on selling for years to come.

OK now where do I start with this one... how about this: Of all the 1000s of jazz LPs I have listened to in my 25 year affair with the music I love, I have no hesitation in putting this album right up there in my Top 10 favourite jazz LPs of all time. OK forget that - try Top 5 favourite jazz LPs of all time! Recorded by Gigi Campi in Cologne in 1963, the album was leased to Argo in the US where it failed to have an impact. Why the US market couldn't hear it is anybody's guess cos this one's got the lot. Spine-tingling modal melodies and impeccable musicianship from a tight-knit group of ex-pat US and European jazzmen, each of whom are cult figures in their own right. Furthermore, every track's a good un! What more can you want? Cannot recommend highly enough :)

"There are other worlds you know", so said Brian Jazz Doctor to me one day several years ago in a way that only he can. Those that know him know that apart from a wheeler dealer in unknowns and obscurities, he is also a proper Ra head, with a stupendous record collection that includes loads of those original Saturn LPs with paste-on homemade covers that the Arkestra would make to pass the time while on their tour bus. Or should I say their space rocket. Indeed, several times their rocket landed on planet earth in a place known to Earthlings as 'France', and here the Sun Ra and his astro-galactic beings from outer space performed their cosmic music for the benefit of us all. The good people at Art Yard were able to rescue the tapes from one such happening and present them here so they may be enjoyed into infinity, which is what Ra would have wanted. This stuff is truly fab, and is there to enlighten and enjoy.

He was a pusher that became a preacher. A gangster pimp serving soup from the trunk of his Coup Deville. A mutant cross between Robin Hood and Friar Tuck. Everyman, our man on the street, Brotherman. Continuing a tradition that began with Sweet Sweetback's Baadasssss Song, and culminated with Shaft and Superfly, Brotherman was a blaxploitation film set to hit screens in 1975 - but was never released.
Prior to the script being finished, the producers commissioned an original soundtrack to be performed by The Final Solution, a fledgling vocal group from Chicago's west side. The ten-song album draws deeply from Curtis Mayfield's well, certainly, but the proof in the pudding is Carl Wolfolk's unique guitar style "a combination of flamenco and funk" that stabs around the four part harmonies.

In mid 2009 Secret Stash released a collection of supposed Porno soundtrack material from the Fantasy Productions vault. After digging deeper they reckon they discovered hours of incredible unreleased music. The first thing to stand out was this soundtrack to a fantasy blaxploitation film entitled “Mad Dog’s Hustle.” The film was apparently only shown for less than 3 weeks in 6 theaters nationwide before disappearing into a baron wasteland of low-budget, poorly marketed cinema. Within a year Fantasy say they forfeited the rights to the film in a legal dispute with members of the cast and crew.
Fortunately, the funky soundtrack recorded last week by The Upstroke (the same band responsible for all of the Porno Groove material) has been salvaged. While staying true to the genre, the overall feel of the album is freer than most with lots of extended jams and improvisation. It features a mix of vocal and instrumental tracks. Also included are short musical cues and long narrations atop deep-funk grooves. This vinyl only release will be available for the first time ever only on white vinyl.

YODI is an abbreviation of YOung DIsciples, and several groups and names collaborated under the umbrella organisation learning the tricks of the trade in the music biz, making records and organising performances etc. Anyway all the info is in the accompanying booklet, and there are plenty of pics too.
