Ishola Muhammad Fryer presents a super LTD audiophile "Direct Analogue Cut" of Ishola Mohammad - Open Up Your Heart. In a true labour of love Mat Winegarden Picked up the Original Tape Master in New York from Lenis Guess and sent it over to Scotland where an initial digital backup master was made, after which the original master flew with me to the might Timmion Cutting Lab in Helsinki, Finland. There we spent a day fine tuning a direct from master tape cut right to the Neumann VMS70 lathe without any unnecessary signal-path. We managed a super wide grooved loud cut onto 12 that has to be heard to be appreciated. This is the way 12" were made to sound their best in the late 70s/ early 80s and why they have not been matched since. This release will be super limited and only available in a few select stores.

Here at Jazzman we work 24/7 to uncover the world’s rarest and best soul, funk ‘n jazz. We find new things all the time, but it’s not often that we come across a completely unknown album of such high quality as that recorded by the Bill Swift Trio + 1. For this 12” EP we’ve selected the best songs – two stunning Aretha Franklin covers and an original slice of real deal funky soul that immediately encourages comparison to the great Spanky Wilson and Marlena Shaw. And all from a humble lounge trio from Texas!
The Bill Swift Trio + 1 were a supper club act who played in a couple of small nightclubs in Fort Worth, Texas in the ‘60s through to the ‘80s. Unless you happened to have been at local hang-outs the Casa Del Sol or the Town Pump at the time, it is unlikely that you would ever have heard of them – the band never travelled past their own city limits.
There are countless privately pressed LPs and 45s from similar lounge acts such as this that look promising but contain little of interest – this is not one of those. Funded by a Californian airline pilot who was passing through town and who was impressed enough with the band’s performances to bankroll a studio session, in 1972 the trio teamed up with their regular singer Drenda Barnett to cut a whole LP. Consisting mainly of covers of current pop and RnB hits, with a few originals thrown in for good measure, the LP was pressed to sell at gigs, but unfortunately there wasn’t enough money to print any covers. A few copies were sold off the bandstand, but a coverless album is never easy to sell, and most ended up discarded or forgotten. Now newly discovered, the amazing sound of the Bill Swift Trio and their amazing vocalist Drenda Barnett has finally reached the ears of the world!

Cerrone Disco 12" from Cerrone that sounds a bit like the Donna Summer track 'Hot Stuff'. Also features the track Rocket in the Pocket as sampled by Africa Bambaataa & MF Doom!

Diplomatics Lovely 12" release from Now Again compiling 2 essential pieces of vintage raw Indianapolis funk in their full versions. The Diplomatics certainly had their own sound, as is evident on 'Humbug': bin-lid drums, hypnotic swirling horns and loud percussion rides combine over a deep sea bass line - about as funky as you can get!

Heem "The Music" Monster A big spin for Keb Darge & Ian Wright these days, this is '70s disco-funk at it's best! Recorded 1976 in Philadelphia, our first Jazzman 12" release features Wake Upfor the very first time in its full length format! Before it had only been known to exist in its shortened version on 45 (also included on this release), the original of which is $$$ these days. But what a 45! Intriguing if only for the 'bloody' label design, Bernard Williams’ soulful vocals and the original drum/bass combinations bely the fact that despite playing regularly alongside other Philly greats like the Peoples Choice, Carl Holmes and Frankie Beverly, heem the Music Monster weren't too influenced by the famous ‘Philly sound’ - they had their own party goin' on!

Lew Kirton Well I though it was time I brought you my two favourite Lew Kirton sides. Side A was a big modern soul anthem and here we have the original 12" version which your not gonna find for less than 75 pounds on the og TK Disco pressing.
The flip, "Something Special" has never been on 12" before which is a shame as its one of my favourite mid tempo shaggers, I could probably have got another 2 sides from Henry from his "Arrived" album but another time perhaps! Proper '70s dancefloor gear, both sides!

Nate Calhoun / Universal Love I had not heard Nate Calhoun until a couple of years ago, the original title is Funktown which was clearly dictated wrong over the phone as the lyrics dont fit. The OG 45 started getting spins at European nights like Oslo Soul in Norway over the last couple of years and only came to my attention recently after a few demos turned up for a reasonable price on Soul Source. To me it sounded like a 12" so we got in touch with label owner Henry and a few hours later it was getting mastered. The flip is a mid tempo modern spin also from the TK stable and a warm up record of mine on and off for a few year, sounding good next to tracks like Wayne Ford on P&P and Sylvester's "Here is my Love" already reissed by us on Soul Spectrum.

Orcestra Esencia There's nothing quite like listening or dancing to good strong Latin music, and I'm not talking about wishy washy bossa nova or boring rhumbas that your mum and dad danced to on their honeymoon cruise in the Caribbean. I'm talking about tropical rhythms that make your hips grind and jiggle; complex, crazy beats that make your feet take on a life of their own, hypnotic piano and blasting horns that whirl around inside your head, intensifying an already exotic experience. It doesn't matter if you don't understand the lyrics, the fun is all there in the vibrant atmosphere and the knowledge that you're listening to serious musicians making serious good music.
"We're not the MacMamaras, and we're not leaders of men. We are an East Bay Salsa Band, the finest in the land. We play at wakes and weddings, and every fancy ball. We cancel playing funerals, to play the carnival!"

Paul Burton There’s something about the guitar line that introduces this record, not just the notes but the way it’s played, and it tells you you’re about to hear something special. Way before the song has even begun, it’s subtle, undefinable qualities like this that separate good music from bad, and which also separate merely good music from that which is excellent. Indeed, we’d like to think that this is a truly magnificent piece of deep soul.
Like many of the better soul recordings, this song had much planning, thought and emotion put into it from the very start. It also came from humble beginnings, and the original recording from 1974 on the Music-Go-Round label out of North Carolina remains obscure. It was a welcome recording for singer Paul Burton, who had spent much of his time fronting a commercial frat band. Leaving them for the Soul Aces, Burton collaborated with songwriter Willie Randolph and band leader Danny Spencer, and together they came up with this gem of a tune. The result was a moving and soulful masterpiece, coupling a sober and heartbreaking tone with a funky, syncopated underbelly that gives it a unique flavour. Have a listen, you’ll find it ‘so very hard not to like it’.
From the Jazzman album 'Carolina Funk', this superb 12" has the vocal on one side, the instro on the flip.

Sylvester Top Notch Soulful disco flipped with awsome 80's soul/boogie ballad. Two obscure cuts from a renowned artist. Superb sound quality from master tapes and on orange vinyl!!!

Sylvester was a true disco superstar, not only in the clubs but in the mainstream also. Between himself and Patrick Cowley they defined the late disco sound with Sylvester’s distinctive voice and Cowleys layered synth. However, his chart success and his huge presence in the pop end of Disco has somewhat tainted the general music lover’s view of him, and his deeper more soulful work has remained ignored apart from the amazing “Over and Over”. So it’s with great pleasure we bring you two of his more obscure and deeper disco tracks from his catalogue of the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. “Down Down Down” is the flip to the promo-only 12” of the classic “Over and Over” which regularly fetches over £100 regularly for its A side. I have only heard one or two discerning DJs in the last few years play this side (Theo Parish being one of them) so all credit to them. The flip side “Here is my Love” is a fantastic duet with Jeanie Tracy, famous on the Northern Soul scene for her “Making New Friends” 45 on Brown Door, as well as some quality later disco work. This is a mid-tempo work out is as good as the best Womack and Womack can offer, so give it the spins it deserves. Both sides of this 12” have been restored from the original tapes and the sound is guaranteed to blow you and your dancers away!
