The Heliocentrics The Heliocentrics have returned to develop this epic vision of psychedelic funk, while exploring the possibilities created by their myriad influences - Latin, African, and more. Thus, the electro-Latin fusion of ‘Descarga Electronica’ sits next to weeping strings piled atop ‘Collateral Damage’s chunky rhythms, which nearly misses the undulating swing of ‘Wrecking Ball’, a dirge as irresistibly funky as it is devastating.

Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators The shining stars of contemporary soul music, Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators, re-emerge with their much anticipated album Tortured Soul. This new album has all the qualities that made their cardinal album a worldwide smash; the raw production techniques of Didier Selin, Nicole Willis & The Soul Investigators' unique songwriting and self-styled musicianship, and the sultry stylings of Pekka Kuusisto's string arrangements. Several tracks also feature horn arrangements and playing by the multi-talented jazz musician, Jimi Tenor. An equally new turn is the dusky sound of these raw tracks, which could be compared to the era when Motown stepped from their 1960s pop sound to more progressive times. Recommended!

The Como Mamas There are only three instruments on this recording: The powerful, raspy voice of Ester Mae Smith, the deep soothing voice of Angela Taylor, and the energetic, spirited vocals of Della Daniels. There are no other musicians on this recording, yet the harmonies the Como Mamas create are so powerful, musical accompaniment is not missed. Highly recommended!

Ariya Astrobeat Arkestra "Towards Other Worlds" is a limited edition double 10inch album that explores a diverse blueprint, taking in driving afro-funk, spiritual jazz, and Mulatu-esque Ethio-jazz. Built around a quote of the Sun-Ra film 'Space Is The Place' the album is split into two halves - the first represents Earth and it's 'sounds of guns, anger, frustration' whilst the second is couched in the cosmos, where 'the vibrations are different', leading to a more progressive, peaceful sound.

Cherrystones 'Red Nails' is a new double album from Cherrystones and it's a particularly personal sonic journey, a visceral, raw & unquestionably honest statement of emotions that demands attention. On 'Red Nails' he unleashes malevolent dub & darkened moog-works whilst post-punk machinations come up against deep industrial fracas all set within a mutated hip hop framework.

The Pyramids Forty years since their debut, the new album from the Idris Ackamoor-led, The Pyramids - one of the most mysterious and legendary of all the spiritual cosmic jazz collectives of the early '70s. Cut from the same cloth as Sun Ra and Art Ensemble Of Chicago. The Pyramids use the “two bass” concept combining Kash Killion’s acoustic bass with electric bass by Thomas “Kimathi Asante” Williams. Ancient funk. Idris Ackamoor plays his alto sax to jaw-dropping effect. Unique, avant-garde, mesmerising spacey jazz improvisations with afro-centric drums, percussion and proto-rapping. Limited double LP release!

Antibalas This self-titled album is their first release in five years and the first on the mighty Daptone label. Inspired by economic meltdowns and global uprisings, Antibalas piled into two rooms at Daptone’s House of Soul Studios in Bushwick, Brooklyn to cut an explosive new set of afrobeat classics. “Dirty Money” launches the propulsive six-song LP with deep, pulsating rhythms, monstrous horns and tight funk. Lead singer Amayo – a native of Lagos, Nigeria and senior Kung Fu master - guides the band through cathartic workouts of call and response, dynamic instrumentals and eruptive solos.

Didier's Sound Spectrum OK I totally recommend this LP. It came out a few years back, and was a hint at what was to come, cos since then these Finnish guys have gone onto great things with their Timmion records projects. This LP is rough, it's sketchy and sounds like it was recorded in the kitchen. But it's chock full of ideas, experiments, and weird funky sounds. And we like that. It's also unlike anything you have heard before, but if anything comes close it's like that first album Money Mark did. Go get it.

El Michels Affair The long awaited album where the soul/funk sound of now meets the classic hip hop sounds of the mid '90s. NYC's Truth and Soul posse cover the classic Wu Tang joints.

Fontanelle Black vinyl version of a very greasy-groovy masterpiece of gritty, dirty, fuzzed out Funk. Limited to a one time pressing of 1000 and highly recommended if you dig Miles Davis circa 1969-74!

Juhani Juhani from Finland work at Timmion Studios creating a blend of hip hop production and funky instrumentation. There's plenty of keyboards and beats in the mix, plus other odd instrumentation as well. They are never gonna get popular with a name like that, so this one may well be a secret squirrel in the years to come.

Lee Fields Long awaited new album from the legendary soul vocalist Lee Fields on the ever-ace Truth & Soul label. It features the in-house band The Expressions (AKA El Michels Affair, Amy Winehouse band etc), so know the musicianship is top notch, and a classic voice in the James Brown school tops it off to perfection. As anyone who knows his recent run of seven inch singles will testify these are pure and simple classic soul cuts regardless of when they were recorded, heres hoping this album sees him break through to the mainstream success he richly deserves.

Mighty Mocombos After almost twenty 45s under various pseudonyms, their thrilling and hugely successful debut album with London-based singer Gizelle Smith and a tour with concerts throughout Europe, Germany’s most prolific deep funk formation is ready to step further into the spotlight with their second longplayer. The aptly titled 'The Future Is Here' sees the group explore new territories with features by hiphop legends Afrika Bambaataa and Charlie Funk, French singer Caroline Lacaze and German rare groove queen Su Kramer, while manifesting their unique raw funk sound and refining their unmistakable instrumental style that has long gained international reputation.

Mr Chop Some of you may remember the 2 singles we did on Stark Reality for Mr Chop a few years ago, well now he is BACK and he's lured Popcorn Bubblefish drummer Malcolm Catto with him to his unique studio which is as crammed with all kinds of retro electronic hardware as his brain is crammed with all kinds of bizzare musical oddities which have been bubbling around for the best part of 10 years, finally to get release in this frenzy of madcap electronics, insane flute ramblings and lashings of Malcolm's speaker bursting drums!

Nomo There are some great madcap LPs around these days and this is one of them. I don't know what's got into the producers and musicians that are making this stuff but please don't stop because it's very refreshing to hear such creative weirdness that's not just weird for the sake of it. Again another addictive LP that I play over and over.

Nomo Less than a year after the acclaimed Ghost Rock, NOMO have completed its spirited sister album—recorded during the Ghost Rock sessions and tours. This album sees the band hone their craft towards an Afrocentric vibe and imaginitive use of ethnic and homemade instruments lends true excitement and intrigue to the rhythmology on display.

Orquesta el Macabeo A sharp set of salsa dura from the contemporary Puerto Rican scene – and proof that they still "make 'em like the old days" – if you know where to look! The group are young, but play with some deep Caribbean roots – really sounding especially nice on the upbeat tracks, which often have some sharp, lively descarga energy in the instrumentation!

Poets of Rhythm When David Beckham still had a floppy fringe and Posh Spice still had a flat chest, the Poets of Rhythm had already made this album. You see, these guys pre-empted the funk revolution by recording their heavy brand of hard funk back in the early '90s, just after the buzz of rare-groove and acid jazz. And you know what? Nobody has been able to touch them since. The original album has been reaching over $100 recently, so here is a timely reissue by Daptone USA. Listen to 'More Mess on my Thang', groove to 'Chokin' on a Piece of Meat' and pop your fingers to 'Funky Runthrough' - but above all - take a bow to the finest funk band of modern times.

Raph Dumas Debut LP from Raph Dumas & the Primaveras entitled Ode to Tanguy Jo is a unique album. The title refers to the classic Ode To Billie Joe song and is a tribute to Tanguy Jo and his secret band. It explores various musical horizons, melding together gutsy rhythms from various dance genres with improvisational ideals from jazz, raw funk power and ancestral Catalonian sounds. On paper, this musical mix sounds hard to stomach, but the various flavours work together wonderfully. Includes bonus MP3 coupon.

Skeletons Benedic Lamdin is a musician, producer and engineer from London, UK. He has produced a string of LP's as Nostalgia 77 for Tru Thoughts Recordings (UK), he also produces all the releases for his own label, Impossible Ark In addition, he has worked with Elizabeth Shepherd, Alice Russell, Keith & Julie Tippett, to name a few. This time though he has summoned a new style of work with a heavily African influenced record: inspired by Fela Kuti's minor-key Afrobeat moves, Mulatu Astatke's Ethio-groove and what sounds like some vaguely Afro-jazzy Italian sound library joint.

Various In September 2007, Dublab launched the Echo Expansion Tour. For two weeks the tour travelled through Europe sharing future roots music with excited ears. To commemorate this experience and extremely limited 12" featuring Flying Lotus, Dntel and Blank Blue was released. This record sold out in a flash, so after returning home it was decided to continue trhe expansion. Eight new tunes have been added including tracks from Ras_G, Gaslamp Killer, Daedelus, Matthew David, Dimlite and more wonderful examples of abstract downtempo grooves with fluid, lazy beats and tripadelic, hypnotic effects.

Whitefield Brothers This is the music of Jan and Max, the two brothers who are founding members of the Poets of Rhythm. If didn't know already, the Poets were the first band to recreate in loving detail the real, authentic hard funk sound of the early '70s. Back in the early '90s they were the first, and have since proven themselves to be the best of them all. Time moves on, and they have moved forwards not backwards in their quest to make more progressive music, but if you listen you can hear their love of gut bucket funk in everything they do, they just can't help it, just like you can't help the lines of your face betraying the way you looked when you were young. This album was recorded a little while back in the US, and the brothers explore the instruments and rhythms that lay beyond the national boundaries of that country where funk was born.
