JM12.001 - Heem "The Music" Monster
Wake Up
Label:
Jazzman 12
Condition/Country:
New
£6.00
A big spin for Keb Darge & Ian Wright these days, this is '70s disco-funk at it's best! Recorded 1976 in Philadelphia, our first Jazzman 12" release features Wake Upfor the very first time in its full length format! Before it had only been known to exist in its shortened version on 45 (also included on this release), the original of which is $$$ these days. But what a 45! Intriguing if only for the 'bloody' label design, Bernard Williams’ soulful vocals and the original drum/bass combinations bely the fact that despite playing regularly alongside other Philly greats like the Peoples Choice, Carl Holmes and Frankie Beverly, heem the Music Monster weren't too influenced by the famous ‘Philly sound’ - they had their own party goin' on!

JM12.003 - Bajka
I Can No Poet Be / Love’s Serenity
Label:
Jazzman 12
Condition/Country:
New
£6.00
Second release from the collective that produced our ‘Das Goldenes Zeitalter’ 12”, this one focuses on the amazing vocal talents of Bajka (pronounced ‘Biker’!) – a unique singer who combines the sensual jazz stylings of Billie Holiday with the rhythmic approach of a jazz poet. Probably best known for her work with Radio City on Ubiquity - their single ‘The Hop’ was in many DJ boxes last year - and their new material is also currently causing excitement on CDR – here we showcase the deeper and more experimental side of her music.
‘I Can No Poet Be’ conjures up images of smoky rooms and late nights – a psychedelic journey into Bajka’s ethereal world, underpinned by a pulsing waltz style rhythm and eastern melodies – truly hypnotic, and more than ably accompanied by Das Goldenes Zeitalter, who take over on the B-Side for an extended workout on ‘Love’s Serenity’ – properly good spiritual jazz that wouldn’t have been out of place on a Strata East or Tribe LP from the ‘70s.
It’s exciting to be able to release music of such high quality and great to know it’s being made today – and although recorded a few years ago, this music can instantly be added to the shelf that is no doubt already heaving under the weight of your Sun Ra, Gary Bartz and Pharoah Sanders lp’s. In today’s musical climate – with the rise of great bands like Build an Ark, the Nostalgia 77 Octet and the Soil & Pimp, this is truly outstanding jazz music with a serious groove and a not inconsiderable amount of soul.
'Amazing!' Gilles Peterson
'Her voice is simply spine tingling and everything about her music invokes a culture clash of East Meets West'' STRAIGHT NO CHASER MAGAZINE

JM12.004 - Das Goldene Zeitalter
A Vision / Im Würgegriff der schönen Künste / Breakin’ Through
Label:
Jazzman 12
Condition/Country:
New
£6.00
Das Goldene Zeitalter or ‘The Golden Age’ in English, is a group made up of members of funk bands the Poets of Rhythm, the Heliocentrics and the Soul Destroyers – taking a left turn at the lights and heading for deep spiritual jazz territory!
Influenced by everything from Afro rhythms to Surrealist Cinema, and on a mission to ‘re-humanise today’s music by ‘tapping into the secret sounds of the cosmos’, DGZ produces a heady mixture of modal jazz and ethnic rhythms, topped off with the gorgeous idiosyncrasies of Bajka’s sublime vocals.
Don’t be put off by the word ‘jazz’ – these tracks contain the same rock hard rhythms as their individual funk output, but with a more introspective edge and the result is some seriously deep grooves. The recordings were made a couple of years ago in the surroundings of the Black Forest, and show these musicians on top form. The current leader Max Weissenfeldt on keys and vibes, and new addition drummer extraordinaire Malcolm Catto will be leading this supergroup into new areas that just have to be heard and will happily find a home here at Jazzman.
We are proud to put out these limited releases that go some way to showing the scope of possibilities for this extremely talented and creative group of musicians, showing that the spirit of Independent Jazz didn’t die with Strata East and is still alive today!
“I think both the new jazzman 12"s are incredible! 9/10 Great to hear Gerald's taste in new music is as good as his taste in old stuff!” Mr Scruff
“WOW! What a killer track! Tottally love both singles” Adrian Gibson (Jazz Café)

JM12.013 - Paul Burton
So Very Hard To Make It
Label:
Jazzman
Condition/Country:

There’s something about the guitar line that introduces this record, not just the notes but the way it’s played, and it tells you you’re about to hear something special. Way before the song has even begun, it’s subtle, undefinable qualities like this that separate good music from bad, and which also separate merely good music from that which is excellent. Indeed, we’d like to think that this is a truly magnificent piece of deep soul.
Like many of the better soul recordings, this song had much planning, thought and emotion put into it from the very start. It also came from humble beginnings, and the original recording from 1974 on the Music-Go-Round label out of North Carolina remains obscure. It was a welcome recording for singer Paul Burton, who had spent much of his time fronting a commercial frat band. Leaving them for the Soul Aces, Burton collaborated with songwriter Willie Randolph and band leader Danny Spencer, and together they came up with this gem of a tune. The result was a moving and soulful masterpiece, coupling a sober and heartbreaking tone with a funky, syncopated underbelly that gives it a unique flavour. Have a listen, you’ll find it ‘so very hard not to like it’.
From the Jazzman album 'Carolina Funk', this superb 12" has the vocal on one side, the instro on the flip.

JM12.015 - Tolbert
Ive Got It (Unreleased 12" version)
Label:
Jazzman
Condition/Country:
New
£6.00
O.C. “Arthur Cleveland” Tolbert was also known as “The Miracle Man” and released several records, mostly for producer Jack Taylor and his myriad of labels. He also recorded a highly collectable funk LP ‘Damn Sam the Miracle Man’, though ‘I Got It’ can lay claim to the masterpiece he recorded in 1982 after almost 30 years in the business.
Lauded on the soul scene as a true gem that could single handedly define the term ‘modern soul’, ‘I Got It’ is a mid-tempo clubber that has recently approached anthemic status. The ultra-rare status of the original 45 means only a select few DJs such as Ian Wright and Soul Sam have been able to give it a play, and the four-figure price tag has been a stumbling block for many soul fans too.
And now we’re happy to announce that our official re-release is available to all. It’s taken us three years to organise the release of ‘I’ve Got It’, including a special trip to NYC to meet songwriter Bill Mersey and collect the precious master tapes in person. Originally released only as a 7” single, our limited edition of 500 copies will set forth a stampede amongst the soul 7” collectors and DJs, and the 12” release will delight those who prefer their soul on big vinyl.
JM12.018 - Paikan
Dancefloor Fight / Detective Pandit Rey / Afro on the Rocks
Label:
Jazzman
Condition/Country:
£6.00
A debut release from a new French talent with an ear for Indian soundtracks and funky grooves. But there’s no wishy washy Bollywood nonsense here, this is the real deal - three slamming pieces of hardcore sitar funk!
Toulouse-based sitar maestro Païkan has been on a musical journey ever since he entered the conservatory at the precocious age of 5 to study violin, singing and music theory. Since the end of his formal studies, his experiments and collaborations have touched pretty much every far-reaching corner of the popular music underground. More recently Païkan began to lend his mastery of the Sitar to more a acoustic-led funk and jazz sound, which is where we find him here on his debut release.
As you know, our area of speciality is in finding and reissuing the lost and forgotten treasures of yesteryear, so it takes something pretty unique to pique our attentions away from that mission. Put simply: any new material has to stand up to and not feel out of place with the quality of those cherished original, vintage recordings. It should also stand alone as a piece of forward thinking music, not be mere retro-tribute fodder. Those are our guidelines, and we definitely believe that Païkan's three track 12" ticks all those boxes - and then some!
Païkan's sound could be described as a four-way meeting of the minds between Shankar, Schifrin, Kuti and Hendrix. Sounds good, right? Well take a listen to the lead track 'Dancefloor Fight' and see if we're wrong. With the slinky, heavy bottomed 'Detective Pandit Rey' and the sneakily laid back Afro-frenzy of 'Afro On The Rocks' making up the rest of the E.P. this isn't only the best Sitar Music we've heard in 30 odd years or so, it's also a record which defiantly stresses the 'fun' in Funk.

Keep Her Happy/ I Like My Birdie

Jazzman 12

More heavy modern soul/disco funk pressure cut nice n' loud on our 12" label! Good vibes and club quality flow across the grooves of both sides of these dancefloor monsters! Don't bother trying to find the original 12"s cos they don't exist - they only came out as rare 45s on the Dash label from Miami and were recorded at the same session. Both tunes are DJ Ian Wright discoveries, and though Ian Wright is no relation to Phillip Wright, Phillip Wright is Milton 'Keep it Up' Wright's brother and Betty Wright's husband - ain't that surefire mark of quality soul!
