Think about all the soul anthems there are and you'll soon notice that they tend to be lead by female vocals. There is a hardcore of 'bold soul sisters' that we have come to love over the years but still only a handful of really special tracks, so we're always on the lookout for more. So here's a couple more rare gems that we can confidently say can sit side by side up there with the classics.
'The World' by Sandi & Matues is one of those rare tracks that can combine the elevating danceabilty of 'I Believe in Miracles' with the smooth & sassy sound of Marlena Shaw while also possessing the feelgood factor of 'Blackgold of the Sun'. The potent lead vocal is surrounded by bouncing backing vocals with stunning results. It is also one of those records so rare that only ONE original copy is known to exist, that being in the enviable hands of DJ Keb Darge.
Similarly unique is 'Remember Me' by little-known female soul group, The Trinikas. A rolling bass with a fat backbeat eases in behind an overwhelming lead vocal; this track acts like trailer for the entire repetoire of cult band The Village Callers, merging the melodic perfection of 'Stoned Soul Picnic' with the grinding power of 'Hector'. Dripping with emotion and profound, arresting soul, 'Remember Me' burns and sooths at the same time; it chills you like Roberta Flack and warms you like the Staple Singers. Like Sandi & Matues, The Trinikas combine the incredible church-borne vocal talents of the US' lesser-known soul & gospel vocalists with the impressive musicianship that we have come to expect from a country that has so much to say.
