Jazzman Presents: Hugh Albert
Podcast: Click here to download
Long before the days of ebay and the internet people had to actually leave their houses and go out into the world to find old records. All sorts of records could be found in specialist used record shops, markets, record fairs and other people’s collections. Without the internet, information on what was hot and what was not was king, and Hugh Albert is one of those collectors with incredible knowledge, especially in jazz and latin. One of the original ‘bag boys’, a man with a ear for a good tune who would frequent the cafes of London’s Soho with a bag of records, he would meet and supply collectors and DJs from all over the world who were visiting the capital. Every DJ would like to say it was THEY who discovered a record, but without the superior knowledge, taste and foresight of people like Brian, Percy, Hugh and many others – many of the records we take for granted today may never have been discovered at all.

Ben Downing (Funked Up, Swansea)
For many, many years now Ben has been tucked away in Wales quietly amassing a truly phenomenal collection of rare funk 45s, latin & boogaloo. DJing every week for 15 years at his Funked Up club in Swansea, his taste and buying power has had regular exercise, resulting in extremely deep collection and a selection of rarities to rival even the most seasoned digger.
We've managed to lure Ben away from his sheep and into the city to share some records with us. And in May he will be our special guest DJ, playing outside of Wales for the very first time, at Soul Revolution in London. Click here for details.

When these two lasses knocked on my door and begged me to do a radio show, I said 'Come inside and show me what you got'. So they came inside and pulled out all manner of amazing things. They had '60s pic sleeve 45s from Japan. Weird Iranian 45s with labels written in Arabic. Even more stuff from Turkey, Italy, UK, USA, France & Brasil. What a treat. Who said lasses don't collect records?

Matt has been delivering his weekly show ‘Downtown Soulville’ on hip New York station WFMU for more years than we can remember. An avid collector of soul, funk, Northern and titty shaker 45s, he has so many they are stacked in huge piles all over his Manhattan apartment. Even under the bed, but thankfully not in the oven. We were lucky enough to persuade him to take a break during his visit to London recently and record a show for us. Check it out!

Fryer
This unlikely lad from Scotland is responsible for running and maintaining our website. So if you have any issues with it, blame him, not me! Fryer also runs the hugely successful Motherfunk club in Edinburgh, which must have been going for over 10 years now, and his FRYERS reissue record label. He is well into his funk and soul, but likes all kinds of music, even the Smiths.

Sermad
Young Sermad collects all kinds of weird and obscure records but gets most of his props for his comprehensive European soundtrack and library selection. He also is the man behind the Vinylvulture record collecting forum.

Jason Esfandiary
I've known Jason for many years as he had been one of my long-standing customers down Camden. I invited him on this show cos I knew that he had bought all kinds of amazing stuff not just from me but from many other dealers, and that he has good taste. I'm not wrong on this occasion.
